Designer Statement
When I was working on the MEYER TABLE in 2014 and 2015, solid wood tables were often conceived as very heavy objects. A thick tabletop, substantial legs, traditional joinery. The material itself was beautiful, but the overall appearance could often feel bulky. I was interested in finding a way for a table made from solid oak to feel refined and precise without losing the strength of the material.
The tabletop is made from 26 millimetres of solid oak. A bevel along the upper and lower edges makes it appear significantly slimmer in profile. During the development process, it really came down to millimetres. How wide and how high should the bevel be to create the right sense of harmony? That exact proportion is what gives the MEYER TABLE its lightness.
The legs are another important part of the design. They taper into a triangular shape and are set at a slight angle. This makes them appear very delicate despite the solid wood, while still giving the table stability. Even the adapters follow the same geometry. To me, this creates the impression that the tabletop and legs flow into one another rather than simply being assembled as separate parts.
For me, the quality becomes especially apparent in the details. If you turn the table over, you can see the precise milling where the legs are fitted into the tabletop. The entire table is assembled using just eight screws. The edges are sanded by hand and the solid oak is treated with a specially developed wax and oil blend. You can still feel the wood and its surface, but it never feels rustic. That was exactly what mattered to me. To interpret solid wood in a refined and contemporary way.
MEYER is made in Germany, and that craftsmanship is present in every transition and connection. At the same time, the construction is highly practical for everyday use. Because the table has no apron, it offers plenty of legroom. And solid wood has one major advantage for me. Even after many years, the surface can be sanded down and treated again. Afterwards, the table can look almost new. That simply is not possible in the same way with a veneered table. When the material and construction are right, a table like MEYER can accompany generations. To me, that is a much more contemporary form of lasting value than constantly replacing furniture.
That is also why MEYER works not only as a dining table at home. We see it in restaurants, offices and canteens as well. Especially in larger spaces, the solid wood brings something familiar and residential into the room without becoming decorative or heavy. Combined with the MEYER BENCHES, it creates a very clear and calm atmosphere that still never feels cold.
Looking at the design today, in 2026, more than ten years after developing it, I would not fundamentally change anything. MEYER does not follow a trend. Its aesthetic comes from the material, the construction and the proportions. Perhaps that is exactly why it feels just as relevant today as it did then, and why I believe it will still feel contemporary fifty years from now.

HOW CAN I IMAGINE YOUR BLACK TONE?
The solid oak stained black has an ultra matt, timeless look. Scratches and scrapes can be touched up with a touch-up stick. Small knots and signs of growth are normal. Thanks to the naturalness of the material, the color rendering is always different and can also be perceived as anthracite, depending on the wood batch and grain. Since wood is a natural product, the grain is always unique and makes every object unique. The best thing to do is to order our samples ( HERE ) and take a look for yourself.
WHAT FINISH DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR THE WOOD, WAXED OR VARNISHED?
This is a very individual question to be answered. Ideally, we would like to advise you personally and take your circumstances into account. Here are a few bullet points to weigh up the merits of each.
WAXED TABLE TOP:
The advantage of waxed finishing is that you can always wax the MEYER Table again and scratches don't stand a chance. The surface is ultra-matt and the wood comes into its own in all its beauty. Our designer David has a 3-year-old daughter herself, who likes to eat spaghetti at the table and occasionally abuses the MEYER with a fork or likes to draw works of art on the table top. Due to the repeated waxing, the table is so impregnated and robust that it coped well with this. In the worst case, it can be reworked with a small sanding sponge and wax. We offer a suitable care set for this ( HERE ). Even if this refinement involves more effort at first glance, it still has many advantages over lacquered surfaces, above all the table top cannot be destroyed by lacquer chips or scratches. For the reasons, the waxed surface for a solid wood table is also a sustainable and long-term rewarding decision.
LACQUERED TABLETOP:
The varnishing of solid wood does not necessarily make sense. However, if wet wiping is particularly important to you, painting with a protective varnish can make sense. The look is similar to wax, but the varnish seals the pores, resulting in a minimal fine shine - but overall still rather matt. The disadvantage of varnishing is that if the varnish is damaged, e.g. something falls violently onto the wood or kids stick their forks into the table top with full force, then you cannot repair it yourself. In addition, a lacquered table is more susceptible to an unfavorable room climate ( HERE ) more about that.
Both forms of refinement meet the highest standards and it depends on your individual circumstances. That probably doesn't make your decision any easier now. If we had to recommend one variant specifically, it would certainly be the waxed finish. The MEYER can be an excellent addition to your home for decades, small mishaps can always be easily repaired. The waxed wood is extremely pleasant to the touch and also unfolds all its optical advantages. Not sure yet? Then our wood samples might help you to make a decision, you can order them (HERE).
THE MEYER IS VERY FILIGREE, HOW SOLID IS IT?
The MEYER stands out with its filigree silhouette, which skilfully sets the scene for the solid wood. Compared to other tables of its kind, the MEYER is surprisingly stable and is often chosen as a work or dining table. It is in the nature of things that there is a certain dynamic and vibration - if this is unthinkable for you, you should rather choose our RICHTER table ( HERE ). In general, solid wood is a material that doesn't stay the same forever, it lives with you and can also change its shape slightly over the years.
