The black-stained solid oak has an ultra-matte, timeless look. Scratches and scuffs can be repaired with a touch-up stick. Minor knots and growth marks are normal. Due to the natural characteristics of the material, color reproduction always varies and may also appear more like anthracite, depending on the wood batch and grain. As wood is a natural product, the grain is also always unique, making every piece one of a kind. It is best to order our samples (HERE and see it for yourself.
WHICH WOOD FINISH DO YOU RECOMMEND, OILED OR LACQUERED?
This is a very personal question. Ideally, we would like to advise you personally and take your circumstances into account. Here are a few points to help you weigh the respective advantages.
OILED TABLETOP:
The advantage of an oiled finish is that you can re-oil the MEYER table whenever you like, and scratches stand no chance. The surface is ultra-matte, and the wood is showcased in all its beauty. Our designer David has a three-year-old daughter who likes eating spaghetti at the table and occasionally maltreats the MEYER with a fork or likes to paint masterpieces on the tabletop. Thanks to multiple coats of oil, the table is so impregnated and robust that it handles this well. In the worst-case scenario, it can be touched up with a small sanding sponge and oil. We offer a suitable care set for this purpose (HERE). Even though this finish may seem to require more effort at first glance, it has many advantages over a lacquered surface, especially since the tabletop cannot be ruined by peeling lacquer or scratches. For these reasons, an oiled surface is also a sustainable and rewarding long-term decision for a solid wood table.
LACQUERED TABLETOP:
Lacquer on solid wood is not necessarily practical. However, if wiping it down with water is particularly important to you, a protective lacquer coating may be a good idea. The look is similar to an oiled finish, but the lacquer seals the pores, creating a very subtle, fine sheen—though it still looks mostly matte overall. The disadvantage of lacquer is that once it is damaged—for example, if something heavy falls on the wood or children dig their forks into the tabletop with full force—you cannot repair it yourself. Furthermore, a lacquered table is more susceptible to unfavorable indoor conditions (HERE).
Both types of finish meet the highest standards, and it depends on your individual circumstances. This probably does not make your decision any easier right now. If we had to recommend one option specifically, it would certainly be the oiled finish. The MEYER can enrich your home beautifully for decades in this form, and minor mishaps can always be easily touched up. Oiled wood feels extremely pleasant and velvety to the touch and ultimately showcases all its visual advantages. Still not entirely sure? Then our wood samples may help you make your decision; you can order them (HERE).
THE MEYER IS VERY DELICATELY CRAFTED; HOW STURDY IS IT?
The MEYER stands out with its delicate silhouette, which showcases the solid wood particularly skillfully. Compared to other tables of its kind, the MEYER appears surprisingly sturdy and is often chosen as a work or dining table. It is simply the nature of the design that there is a certain sense of lightness and movement—if that is unthinkable for you, you should choose our RICHTER table instead (). As a general rule, solid wood is a material that does not always stay the same; it lives with you and can also change slightly in shape over the years.
Designer Statement
When I worked on the MEYER TABLE in 2014–2015, solid wood tables were often conceived in very heavy terms. A thick top, solid legs, classic joinery. The material was beautiful, but the appearance was often clunky. I was interested in how a table made of solid oak could look delicate and precise without losing the strength of the material.
The tabletop is made of 26-millimetre-thick solid oak. The chamfer on the top and bottom makes its profile look much finer. During development, it really came down to millimetres. How wide and how high does the chamfer need to be to create the right harmony? It is precisely this proportion that gives the MEYER TABLE its lightness.
The legs are also an important part of the design. They taper in a triangular shape and are set at a slight angle. This makes them look very delicate despite the solid wood while also giving the table stability. Even the adapters take up their geometry. This creates the impression that the tabletop and legs flow into one another rather than simply being assembled.
For me, the quality is particularly evident in the details. Turn the table over, and you can see the precise milling where the legs are fitted. The entire table is assembled with just eight screws. The edges are sanded by hand, and the solid oak is treated with a specially developed wax-oil mixture. You can feel the wood and its surface, but it never looks rustic. That is exactly what was important to me: to interpret solid wood in a delicate and modern way.
MEYER is manufactured in Germany, and this craftsmanship is evident in every joint. At the same time, the design is very practical for everyday use. Because the table does not have a frame, it offers plenty of legroom. And solid wood has one crucial advantage for me. After many years, the surface can be sanded down and refinished. Afterwards, the table looks almost like new again. This is not possible with a veneered table. When the material and construction are right, a table like MEYER can serve generations. To me, this is a much more contemporary form of quality than replacing furniture again and again.
This is why MEYER works not only as a dining table at home. We also see it in restaurants, offices, and canteens. Especially in large spaces, the solid wood brings something familiar and inviting without becoming decorative or heavy. Together with the MEYER BENCHES, it creates a very clear, calm atmosphere that is still not cold.
When I look back today, in 2026, at the 2015 design, I would not change anything fundamental. MEYER does not follow any trend. Its aesthetic arises from material, construction, and proportion. Perhaps that is exactly why it still looks just as relevant today as it did back then, and for me, it will still be contemporary in fifty years' time.
