“The inspiration for the SANDER sofa came from the idea of ​​creating a piece of furniture that offers supreme comfort and relaxation without being limited to formal design principles. I wanted to reinterpret the cozy sofa category, using the potential of design to create a distinctive visual language. This is often neglected with a comfortable sofa. Inspired by the art movements of the 70's and 80's and influenced by postmodern design approaches, I wanted to design a sofa that is unconventional and expressive—without being gimmicky. The unexpected shape is an interplay of the sophisticated upholstered camber and the hand-sewn covers. This creates a symbolic design language that evokes associative images such as clouds or marshmallows. However, SANDER is also strongly located in the present, the influence of our home in Berlin and more precisely of Kreuzberg is reflected in the desire for unconventional shapes and colors as well as the historical charms of postmodernism. With the design language of the SANDER, I want to make it possible to find your own interpretation and thus make the design a very personal experience that meets the needs of modern living.”

What was the challenge in helping develop the upholstery for the SANDER sofa?

"Developing the SANDER sofa was completely different from what we usually do. We went beyond familiar upholstery techniques, we experimented a lot and tried many things out. We had to fully commit to that during development. The bombé shape that defines the sofa's silhouette was a real challenge."

What makes the quality of the SANDER's upholstery stand out?

"Choosing the right foam is especially important. There are huge differences there. Then every single step has to be so carefully thought through that in the end there's little room left for variation, so we can consistently deliver the same high quality. New foam shapes, new stitching techniques, custom-made cushion covers, the tuck-ins - we had to throw old patterns of thinking overboard. Until we arrived at the result you see now. When you sit down in it, you feel like you're sitting on a cloud."

How do I recognize a good sofa?

"What I find really crucial is building a sofa with long-lasting quality - one that doesn't need to be replaced after 5 years. If you focus on quality when choosing a sofa, and prioritize good materials and craftsmanship, you'll pick the right one. I'm a very tactile person - it's not just about how it looks, but also how it feels."
